The Department of Community Medicine is functioning since the existence of Government Medical college, Ariyalur.
The Department is located in the sixth floor of Faculty block.
The Department has been committed to educate the medical students to be community oriented primary care physicians.
In addition to offering high-quality medical education, Our prime aim is to provide promotive, preventive, curative, and rehabilitative health services therefore in developing excellent community physicians and public health workers.
VISION:
The department of Community Medicine envisions achieving the standards of excellence in education of undergraduates.
OBJECTIVES:
- Toidentify and recognize the physical, social, psychological, environmental and economic determinants of health and disease.
- To make a community diagnosis by applying the knowledge of epidemiology in identifying, prioritizing and preventing common public health problems at individual, family and community level and managing public health emergencies thereby functioning as a community and first contact physician
- To develop leadership qualities for a primary care health team.
- To teach them the research principles and methodologies and to orient the students in scientific presentations and publication.

Family Adoption Programme:
Family Adoption Programme has been introduced and included as a part of MBBS curriculum where it is requires for each medical student to adopt around 5 families in rural area with the objective of developing communication skills with the adopted families.
In addition students will understand the dynamics of rural set up in health, identifying any diseases or health conditions and guiding the families in case of health needs

CRMI:
The CRMI’s are posted for about 3 months in the department of Community Medicine. They are posted in Rural field practice area ,urban field practice area , Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam clinic. Their activities are periodically reviewed by the faculties.
